We caught up with social media executive Jessica Wade about the highs and lows of her journey into digital and advice she’d give to her younger self...

My journey into digital started when I was on two-week school work experience and given the opportunity to work in a digital creative agency. This experience sparked an interest in working in the industry, so I decided to pursue a career in Marketing. I then went on to study Marketing at Nottingham Trent University. When I graduated, trying to get a job in digital was not as easy as I thought it would be. I had to work two jobs in retail and admin before landing my first job as a Marketing Executive for a small manufacturing business — not glam at all! Although it was not what I wanted from a first job it actually helped me discover my interest in social media and I ended up moving on to a role as a Social Media Executive. Since then I have pushed many doors, left jobs and been made redundant. I am now with a business working in a job I love in social media marketing which pushes me to pursue my passion for digital.

I am currently a Social Media Executive at Smart Insights, overseeing the social strategy and management of social accounts for a business who provide marketing resources for other businesses.

If I had my time again as a new graduate, I would tell myself not to be ashamed if you don’t have the answer or solution to a problem. Ask and keep asking until you understand. If you don’t ask questions you will never learn. There’s no such thing as a stupid question!

Digital never stands still, there is always something new to learn.

Your skills are constantly developing with the demand of the consumer. Even in my short time from university to now, so much has changed and my skills have had to grow. If you give your all and are willing to learn, you will never be bored in digital.

My advice to anyone interested in working in digital is stay curious. If you have a passion for digital, explore your options and stay connected. The industry is growing and people are always looking for new talent.
